WestBalkanNet (WBN) strongly condemns the act of vandalism against the car of David Gruhonjić in Novi Sad, which represents yet another in a series of intimidating incidents directed at the Gruhonjić family, who have been subjected to a long-standing campaign of persecution, targeting, and dehumanization in Serbia.
The attack, which according to witnesses was carried out by masked individuals with the clear intention of deliberately destroying the property of of David Gruhonjić, son of journalist, university professor, and WBN member Dinko Gruhonjić, cannot be viewed in isolation from the ongoing atmosphere of public vilification that has for years been fostered by pro-government media, political actors, and centers of power in Serbia. Such an atmosphere systematically fuels hatred, legitimizes violence, and creates a sense of impunity for those who engage in attacks against individuals who speak critically about social and political conditions.
Particularly concerning is the fact that the Gruhonjić family has for an extended period been subjected to relentless campaigns of targeting, threats, and public vilification, including attempts to discredit them and endanger the safety of family members. Such practices constitute a serious violation of fundamental human rights, including the rights to personal security, freedom of thought, and freedom of expression.
This incident further confirms the deep social and institutional crisis in Serbia, where political opponents, journalists, academics, and their families are increasingly becoming targets of organized campaigns of hatred and intimidation. The absence of an adequate institutional response only serves to embolden perpetrators and deepen the sense of insecurity among citizens.
The competent authorities in Serbia have an obligation to urgently identify and prosecute those responsible for this attack, while also putting an end to the practice of tolerating media and political smear campaigns that create an environment conducive to violence.
At this moment, solidarity with the Gruhonjić family is also a defence of fundamental democratic values, human dignity, and the right to live freely and safely without fear of politically motivated persecution.
